This season’s opening ceremony at Shaftesbury Abbey is on Saturday 24 March 2018. This year, it is combined with the official launch of the SAVED project (Shaftesbury Abbey, a Voyage of Exploration and Discovery).
The ceremony will begin at 12 noon with a short service led by Rev Denise Binks and will be followed by a presentation about the project by local archaeologist Julian Richards. Refreshments will be served.
At this occasion we would like to thank all the organisations and individuals who have generously supported this community project and everyone is welcome.
Julian Richards, who is co-ordinating the investigations, will give a presentation outlining what is planned over the next two years now that the grant has been awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
‘Initial exploratory geophysical survey has indicated the potential for recovering ‘lost’ elements of the plan of the huge Abbey church, while searches of the records of previous explorations are starting to shed light on why the ruins appear in their present form. This is an opportunity to join us in celebrating the start of our investigations, to hear about the initial discoveries and find out about the volunteering opportunities offered by this exciting project’
